| • |
Brainstorm with the class to come up with a definition for winter and a list of characteristics of this season. Write these items in the appropriate boxes on the map. |
| • |
Next, have students cut out magazine pictures of examples and non-examples for winter. For examples, students can use photos of snow, winter gear, and skiing. For non-examples, students can use pictures of summer flowers, outdoor swimming pools, and water sports. |
| • |
Once this COD map has been filled in, brainstorm "winter words" with students. List them beneath the map.
| Winter words might include freezing, icy, chilly, snowfall, mittens, gloves, cold, scarf, boots, earmuffs, plow, icicles, and snowball |
|
| • |
Display the lists as a writing resource for students as they write about the winter season. |
Word Work
| • |
Write winter on the board and point out the –in rime pattern. Circle it. Discuss how a pattern is sometimes in the middle of a word. |
| • |
Brainstorm more –in words, challenging students to find some that use the –in pattern in the middle of the word. |
| • |
Ask students what is the longest word with the –in pattern they can think of? What is the shortest? |
